Broadway Tower Marathon 2012

 November 3rd 2012,

Route Details

The marathon route follows a figure-of-eight along public footpaths, bridleways, and minor country roads.  It begins with views of The Vale of Evesham, takes in a series of delightful Cotswold villages, and reaches half way with spectacular outlooks over Winchcombe, the walking capital of the Cotswolds. The half marathon is the top half of the figure-of-eight.  The race starts at the top of a hill, giving runners a speedy downhill start.  The first few miles are gently undulating, but make sure to keep something for the later hills.  If you're running the half, your first tough hill comes at 6.5 miles.  If you're running the marathon, this is your cutoff point (a generous 90 minutes) - if you don't make the cutoff, you'll be directed onto the half marathon course.  The marathon starts to head uphill about half a mile later.  Once back onto the escarpment, the route rolls gently along before descending on the Windrush Way into the delightful town of Winchcombe.  A few miles of rolling fields keep things interesting on the way back towards Broadway Tower.  Upon rejoining the half marathon route (~20 miles), the route heads back up over the hill and through the woods.  Enjoy the respite down the Cotswold Way for a couple of miles, because there are still a couple of hills to come.  You will head into Snowshill and then down the road towards Broadway.  The final big hill of the day will take you back up to the top of the escarpment with only a mile of gently undulating road back to the finish.
